Overview
4shared Desktop is a backup and cloud storage application that allows users of all knowledge levels to easily protect their valuable data and transfer it to a secure cloud storage location that can be accessed from any supported device. Offered to the users as both a standalone desktop application, web app, and mobile app, 4shared service provides to every user up to 100GB of storage space with a wide array of useful tools for data transfer, management, and retrieval.
This includes everything from initiating file backup transfer by simply dragging and dropping files, to an automatic virus scanner, automatic compression to save some of the cloud storage space, and of course automatic backup and restore feature with full logs. Users should be aware that some of these features are available only to premium users, but they should rest assured that even the introductory free tier of use has enough streamlined tools to make the use of 4shared Desktop for Windows PC attractive to everyone.
The most comprehensive experience of using 4Shared comes from within its standalone Windows application, which features an easy-to-use dashboard and full integration with the OS. The UI is optimized for easy discovery of tools and services, with a three-panel approach that looks similar to many other file management apps.
On the very right is a simple directory listing that showcases all of the folders hosted at the user’s account, Favorites folder listing, and Recycle Bin. On the right are two panels, one for listing files from any selected directory, and the large Upload/Download status panel where the user can easily see the properties of each chosen file, its size, upload date, the percentage of transfer, and many more stats. The bottom left corner of the app holds an important statistic that shows how much free space is left on the cloud.

While the automatic backup and restore feature is limited only to premium users, free users also have some great tools to more easily access files that they have sent to cloud storage. For example, Windows users can simply right-click on any multimedia file hosted on 4shared and select “Stream Media File”, enabling on-the-fly reproduction of compatible audio/video files, thus removing the need to manually download those files before viewing them. Mobile users also have an added ability to create personalized multimedia playlists.
