Overview
Originally released on PC in late 2012, this title remained offered on a wide array of gaming platforms (including all home consoles and handheld mobile devices) until 2020, when it was officially discontinued. During its lifetime on store shelves, it attracted over 100 million downloads and has won several awards in the puzzle and mobile game of the year categories.
Angry Birds Star Wars builds on top of the original Angry Birds formula by enabling everyone to immerse themselves into the Star Wars universe by offering a large campaign that follows the events of films. The control scheme is unchanged and requires smart flicking skills and learning how gravity (or lack thereof) can help solve a wide array of puzzle situations found throughout this lengthy game.
As players can expect, the game starts on the desert planet of Tatooine and gives players control over popular heroes such as Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, and others. The campaign moves through every movie stage by stage, recreating many iconic scenes such as the destruction of Death Star or flying through the asteroid fields. Players are encouraged to experiment with their flicking skills and to smartly deploy special abilities that can be activated just before their Star Wars-themed bird hits their target. The campaign features repayable stages, bonus levels, and special prizes for successful players.
PROS
- Unique Star Wars theme and visuals
- Large campaign covering the events of all Star Wars films
- Fun and challenging puzzles
- Special abilities add depth to gameplay
- Available on a wide range of gaming platforms
CONS
- Discontinued and no longer supported by developers
- Gameplay formula remains largely unchanged from previous Angry Birds titles
- Repetitive gameplay may become tedious for some players
Today, almost a decade after it launched, Angry Birds Star Wars can only be enjoyed as a legacy title that is not actively supported by its dev team anymore. Still, this fun physics puzzler still manages to impress with its faithful Star Wars crossover theme, large campaign, and an incredible variety of fun challenges.
