Overview
HDHomeRun is a companion application to the popular standalone HDHomeRun TV Tuner box that has the built-in capability of detecting TV broadcast signals that are detected “over the air”, and transforming that TV channel into digitally streamed streams that you can connect to your local (or even public) network and access it via your home computers, media streamers, standalone DVR storage (NAS or PC HDD) and a wide array of portable hardware ranging from TVs to smartphones and game consoles.
The desktop app is intended to streamline the process of accessing the TV streams and is specially designed to allow beginners and PC novices to easily set up feed sharing without encountering any problems. This is achieved with a three-step approach – stable hardware and software design, easy to use interface that promotes easy access to all of its tools and services, and finally a wide range of compatibility with media players on PC and other devices. As a standard previewing app, It comes bundled with HDHomeRun QuickTv, but you can also set it up to work with popular multimedia players such as VideoLAN VLC and Windows Media Player.
In its essence, the HD Home Run application is not a fully enabled multimedia player that many people expect at first, but a powerful configuration utility that can regulate the way other video players and devices are interacting with the network-attached HDHomeRun TV Tuner box that sits somewhere in your home and receives over the air broadcast feeds of all of your favorite television channels via a standalone antenna that you have to provide.
It is important to note that while PC usage of this app is free, some services (such as DVR functionality) and mobile (especially iOS) viewer apps can be pricey.
Installation and Use
HDHomeRun PC app comes in an installation package that is a little bit under 100MB in size. To install it, simply open the EXE file and follow on-screen instructions until the transfer procedure is complete.
Upon first firing up the app, you will realize that it is in fact just a small configuration utility that plays the role of “driver” between your chosen Preview/Main video player app, and the TV tuner hardware. The app has a simple plain windows design with 4 tabs – Location (where you can set your country and postal code), Application (for picking your preferred Main and Preview video player app), Tuner, and Advanced (for configuring detection of the tuner, channels, and built-in support for reinitializing drivers).
Once set up, you can follow the instructions on how to access the video feeds from your HDHomeRun tuner to your PC, and then other devices in your home. Please be aware that some mobile apps are not free, and in some cases, you need to pay to unlock access to specific mobile platforms (like iOS).
