Overview
The user interface of the Minecraft Server app is as simple as it gets. Upon starting the app users are greeted with the main dashboard that showcases the activity of the automatically created Minecraft server. The dashboard is separated into three panels – Stats area where server info is located (which include the current memory use, CPU use, average tick rate for the server, and listing of transferred packets), “Log and Chat” area where all the necessary server reports are showcased, and finally “Players” area that will list all the currently connected players.
If you want to run a Minecraft multiplayer server by yourself things get kind of involved (see this wiki article for a tutorial). First, make sure you can use java from the command line.
In order to run your server and stay out of trouble, we highly suggest that you should at least know about the following:
- Using the command-line and editing configuration files
- Networking in general (IP, DHCP, ports, etc.)
- Your system configuration
- Your network configuration
- Your router configuration (if you want other people to connect over the Internet)
Coded in JAVA, this app lacks any customization options inside its GUI dashboard. However, if users want to customize the server, they need to go to the install directory of the app and locate the text properties file. By editing its entries, users can easily unlock many features that can promote new forms of sandbox gameplay (flying, difficulty, maximum number of players, spawning of monsters, view distance, PvP, Level Seed, and many others).
It is important to note that even though this Minecraft Server app is lightweight and fast, it will start to consume more and more of the host PC hardware performance with the rise of the connected players. If the users wish to create very large multiplayer environments, it is recommended that this app be run on a stronger modern PC.
Minecraft Server is 100% FREE and optimized for use on all modern versions of Windows OS. While it is reliable, its lack of a complete GUI interface means that users have to waste their time fiddling with its backend files to achieve the intended server configuration.
