Overview
Realtek AC'97 is a driver and a free codec, which supports all the standard AC'97 compatible audio chipsets from the two-channel, including host/soft audio and AMR/CNR based designs. Today, a large majority of sound chips that are infused directly into PC motherboards are fully AC'97 compatible, making this driver package one of the most widely popular audio drivers in the world.
While hardly the most interesting piece of software, the AC'97 Audio Codec is a comprehensive addition to your audio set-up. It incorporates proprietary converter technology to achieve a signal-to-noise ratio above 90dB. It also supports multiple codec extensions with variable sampling rates and built-in 3D effects. This audio codec standard that was originally developed by Intel Architecture Labs in 1997 went through several updates over the years, with the latest version v2.3 being in most use today. However after so many years on the market, needs of users modern surpassed the capabilities of original AC'97 Audio Codec, forcing Intel to release its successor “High Definition Audio” Realtek codec that had the ability to work with more than 6 audio streams and compatibility with many new standards and modes of use.
This Realtek AC`97 audio driver supports the following: ALC100, ALC101, ALC200, ALC201, ALC201A, ALC202, ALC202A, ALC650, Realtek ALC655, ALC658, Realtek ALC850.
