Overview
Speedtest by Ookla is a streamlined Chrome browser extension that infuses your browser with the functionality of the famous Speedtest.net website that is used by over 10 million people daily to test the speed, stability, and responsiveness of their internet connection. With over 25 billion tests made on over eight and a half thousand servers located all over the world, Speedtest by Ookla represents a free online service that can accurately test the capability of every kind of internet connection available today – ethernet broadband, Wi-Fi, mobile network, optical internet, school/enterprise network connections and more.
Speedtest Chrome add-on incorporates a new icon to your web browser toolbar and enables you with a single click to test the capabilities of your internet connection. In addition to the traditional measurements of maximum download and upload speeds, this one-minute long test will also showcase the responsiveness of your internet connection (ping) to the test server and “web speed” timed score for the ability to load the website consisting from many small individual elements.
While this addon is fully focused on providing regular users with a simple overview of the current state of their internet connection, Ookla has enhanced their SpeedTest service with numerous professional and enterprise features that can be used for advanced analytics and testing of large internet infrastructure projects. But if you are wondering how your home, work or public internet connection is holding up, if you have enough bandwidth to perform your tasks, you want to see how much bandwidth did your family leave you after they all started using their own internet-connected device, then a simple click on the icon in your Chrome toolbar may be the best and fastest way to find out.
Installation and Use
Speedtest Chrome addon comes in an installation package that is just under 5 MB, enabling you to download and install it in mere seconds. After the installation procedure is finished, a new Speed test icon will appear in your toolbar in the top-right corner of your internet browser. Clicking on it will activate a pop-up window with a single large “GO!” icon that will activate the automatic procedures for determining the speed and quality of your internet connection. The entire procedure is automated and lasts around a minute. While the test performed on Speedtest.net gives you the ability to pick and choose which server to contact during the test, this Chrome addon will automatically contact the closest server.
In the configuration area of the extension, you can choose to Sign-in into the Speedtest account that will remember all your test scores and activate/deactivate the Web Speed test. This particular test requires permission to “Read and change all your data on the websites you visit”. After each finished speed test, a small arrow icon will appear on top of the popup window, enabling you to share your result on social networks, or grab a URL link that you can post anywhere your link.
