Overview
Windows 10 is the latest in the line of successful PC operating systems coming from Microsoft Corporation, successfully managing to merge many online services, new app paradigms, and UI elements into a versatile OS that can run great on a wide variety of devices, including home and work desktop PCs and laptops, tablets, smartphones, embedded systems, Surface Hub, Mixed Reality and Xbox One.
Built on top of Windows 8.1, this latest OS release very quickly managed to become the most successful OS releases in the history of Microsoft, mostly thanks due to paying respect to legacy users who wanted a streamlined Desktop experience without the forced touch interface of Win8. Windows 10 program was released to the public in 2015 as a free upgrade to all owners of Windows 8 and Windows RT, ensuring quick adoption across the entire world.
The most important new features of new Windows OS are its new mouse-oriented user interface (with full support for fast switching to touch-friendly UI), new Start Menu that mixes the popular Win7 and Win8 features, new Edge web browser which eventually adopted the popular Chromium rendering engine, new Task View window and desktop management tool, built-in support for facial and fingerprint recognition, deeper integration of Cortana voice assistant, new game rendering API DirectX 12 which includes support for Raytracing and VR, Xbox integration with standalone game manager app for games available on Windows Store, an-in game UI overlay with many useful stats and tools, wide array of security updates and addons (such as multi-factor authentication, biometric authentication), advanced Command line tool, expanded Windows Update tool, and a wide variety of cloud services.
Can I still download Windows 10 for free?
YES, to get started, you will first need to have a license to install Windows 10. You can then download and run the Media Creation Tool.
While previous versions of Windows OS received service packs (like Win7) or new versions in their title (like Win 8.1), Microsoft has decided to actively patch the OS for free during the entire lifecycle of this OS. So far, It has received three large upgrades – version 1903 and 1909 in 2019 and version 2004 in May 2020. The OS is available for purchase in five main versions (Home, Pro, Enterprise, Education, and lightweight Windows 10 S intended to be a ChromeOS alternative on hardware-limited devices).
Microsoft has aimed to deploy Windows 10 on one billion devices in three years, but they managed to reach this goal in early 2021. As of today, Windows 10 has become the most popular OS from Microsoft, surpassing the legendary Windows 7 and is being used by 73% of active PC users worldwide, and is present on 26% of all modern devices in use (including consoles, tablets, and smartphones).
