Overview

Windows 7 is an operating system from Microsoft for use on personal computers such as home or business desktops, laptops, tablet PCs, and media center PCs that are powered by X86 and X64 processors.

Note: Support for Windows 7 ended on January 14, 2020. We recommend you move to a Windows 11 to continue to receive security updates from Microsoft.

The core benefits of the Windows 7 were focused on ironing out the vast amount of issues that were widely criticized in its processor release Windows Vista, and fully implementing a wide array of advancements (such as advanced search tool, new WinFS storage system, new driver optimizations for increased speed, and much more stable operation than any previous Windows OS release) that made this operating system one of the most celebrated and widely used products Microsoft has ever produced. Even today in 2023, it is estimated that 20% of traditional PCs running Windows are still running Windows 7 OS.

As a part of the Windows NT family of operating systems, Windows 7 arrived on the market in late 2009 as the replacement of poorly received Windows Vista that received many complaints that targeted its stability, performance issues, need for the brand new set of drivers for an incredible variety of devices, lack of compatibility with many legacy hardware accessories, compatibility issues with applications (including video games), and more.
  • High software compatibility
  • High speed
  • Secure and supported minimum interruptions

The number of new features introduced in the Windows 7 program is staggering and touches every aspect of computer use, from deeply hidden system services to the brand new UI that has surfaced many tools for easier and faster interactions.

Some of the most notable add-ons introduced support for handwriting recognition, built-in support for virtual hard disks, faster boot performance, new multimedia options, desktop gadgets, new security services, a brand new control panel that has surfaces much more options for visual and workflow customization, new Windows Explorer options, new Windows Photo Viewer, a brand new taskbar, hardware-accelerated Aero desktop theme, new app window management, new Sound schemes, multilingual support, better support for solid-state drives (with the new TRRIM command for reducing data cell wear), support for new USB transfer standards, new display options, and much, much more.

Today, this operating system showcased the numerous benefits of the PC platform, taking advantage of its high modularity and offering users a stable platform for home and business use of a wide array of applications and hardware solutions. It was offered for sale in seven versions (Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate), and remained fully supported by Microsoft until 2015 and limited support by early 2020. Crucial security upgrades for Professional and Enterprise versions will be offered until early 2023.

If you need to install or reinstall Windows 7 you can use this page to download a disc image (ISO file) to create your own installation media using either a USB flash drive or a DVD.

As of January 14, 2020, your computer running Windows 7 will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:

  • Technical support for any issues
  • Software updates
  • Security updates or fixes

While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC.
